Redeeming Politics
In The Equipping Group’s “Redeeming Politics” course, Kaitlyn Schiess helped redefine “politics” from today’s common perception. She helps us rightly see politics as a concept that was created by God, and that has become broken because of sin, but that can be hopeful because in Christ, God is reconciling all things to himself. Because of Jesus’ work, there can be restoration — in part now and more fully in eternity — even in the realm of politics! In light of that renewed view of politics, we can see politics through the lens of the story of God.

Session 1 : A Biblical Theology of Politics
In today’s divided world, it is easy for people — including Jesus’ followers — to have a skewed definition of ‘politics.’ In order to think well about politics and act rightly, we must first discover how the Bible actually speaks of politics. In this session, Kaitlyn helps us see why our broken and sinful world creates tension and confusion around this topic. But she also helps us find hope, redeeming our definition of ‘politics’ as a good, God-given reality.

Session 2: The False Gospel of Politics
It might seem that we only have political thoughts and engagements, in your nation’s election season or around a regime change. But in truth, our political formation has been shaped over far more time, and stem from things far deeper. In this session, Kaitlyn helps us combat the false gospel of politics by examining our loves and loyalties, which we are in turn shaped by our identities, our storytelling, our emotions, and our communities.

Session 3: Thinking and Living Well About Politics
In our busy & individualistic lives, what does it look like to view our houses, possessions, and lives in a counter-cultural way? Rather than merely seeing our homes as a place of retreat or self-focus, Dhati and Angie Lewis share from some of their own experiences, some simple but stretching ways they open their table, home, and family to others, for the sake of the gospel. They help us fight cultural norms and challenge us to create spaces for real relationships and gospel restoration.

Session 4 : The Spiritual Discipline of Engaging Politics
If all of life is spiritual, then engaging politics is an act of discipleship and spiritual formation. In this final session, Kaitlyn helps us see through common political rhetoric and see tangible ways that Jesus’ followers can engage politics in a healthy, Spirit-led way, as faithful disciples of Jesus.
