Step 1: Depend on God
After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them on ahead of him, two by two, into every town and place where he himself was about to go. 2 And he said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. 3 Go your way; behold, I am sending you out as lambs in the midst of wolves. 4 Carry no moneybag, no knapsack, no sandals, and greet no one on the road...” — Luke 10:1-4
Pathway Question:
When do you ask God to bring the right people into discipleship relationships, as you build a disciple-making pathway – and how how build it in God’s way?
(+ Personal Question: when do you pray for the lost in your city, and for God to open doors for the gospel?)
Step 2: Define Discipleship
As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” At once they left their nets and followed him. — Matthew 4:18-20
EXAMPLE 1:
A disciple is someone who is increasingly… being with Jesus, becoming like Jesus, and doing what Jesus did.
EXAMPLE 2:
Discipleship is… cultivating the whole person (people) in a particular context (culture) using God’s prescribed means (disciplines) towards God’s desires (character) as they enter the kingdom, grow in grace, mature in godliness, and lead in the kingdom.
EXAMPLE 3:
Disciple-makers are… self-feeding, self-leading, self-multiplying
Pathway Question:
What is your clear definition of discipleship – personally and organizationally?
Who needs to know it?
Step 3: Determine the Path
On the way he asked them, “Who do people say I am?”
But they kept quiet because on the way they had argued about who was the greatest.
They were on their way up to Jerusalem — Matthew 4:18-20
—A few examples from the gospel of Mark
Step 4: Deploy Your Tools
This step is mostly described on the slides — but it asks HOW you are going to take people up the path toward your definition of discipleship
Pathway Questions:
What are the right tools & spaces for each “stop” on your disciple-making pathway?
And most importantly, WHY are those the right tools, stops, and spaces, given your definition of a disciple?
Step 5: Develop Relationships
Who is pouring into me?
Who am I pouring into?
Who are my friends?
Who am I pursuing on mission?
Pathway Questions:
Who do you regularly spend time with, which category do they fall into, & how would that impact your pathway?
What relationships are needed for your pathway?
Step 6: DO IT!
Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these, so that you will be amazed. — John 5:19-20
Pathway Questions:
Do you know how to talk about Jesus in ways that he sounds like good news, to the very real scenarios and lives of the people around you?
